Putting Yourself Out There on Social Media

I've spoken with many folks who want to create content or videos to share on social media but are too paralyzed with fear and self-doubt to go for it. Here are some quick tips (really, a little kick in the butt!) to help you take the leap.

  • Notice your fear. We all feel fear; the key is noticing it and seeing your resistance to putting yourself out there for what it is. Quiet your mind and silence negative self-talk. Your thoughts and contributions are valuable. Acknowledge the fear, then push through it anyway.
  • Start with one topic that you're passionate about—just pick a single thing that you know about and would like to share with your professional (or even personal) audience. There’s no need to overthink it; narrowing your focus will help you clarify your message and get started.
  • Create an outline for your blog or a brief video script—a two-minute or less read/watch. Outline your topic and determine your recording format (e.g., iPhone or Zoom), with the goal of keeping your content and production as simple as possible.
  • Find an accountability partner who will motivate you to create and post, especially for the first time. Having this sort of accountability has been essential for me; it’s so important to have an objective partner to keep you honest.

People want to hear what you have to say. One of the best ways to prospect is to put your voice, your face, and your energy into the universe. There's so much content out there that's not interesting, not compelling, and doesn't have high intent—we need your voice to cut through the noise.

So, give it a try. Notice your fear. Pick one topic you're passionate about. Create a simple outline. Get an accountability partner, then post away.

Onward.
