Say no to meetings that drain you. I get that this is controversial. Maybe you don't think you can say no, but, truly, you can.
Think of a group meeting that's a waste of your time, a Zoom meeting where you're on camera for an hour when you don't need to be, or a 1-on-1 with someone who's asking for your time in a way that doesn’t work for you right now.
Then, say no—RSVP that you can’t make it, let the person know you’re not available. At least for the moment, turn down any sort of meeting that isn't a good use of your time, energy, and attention.
Don't over explain. Clarify what you might be open to—maybe it’s a different format for the meeting, a different kind of conversation, or just a later date. Perhaps you can ask for help from someone else—another team member could go in your stead, or someone could take notes for you. Remember that you have options.
So, look for a meeting on your calendar that you dread, that drains you, that doesn't feel effective, then find a way to say no. Trust me, it’s incredibly freeing to let go of something that’s not working for you and get back the gift of time.
Onward.
