Maybe this is more of an affliction of your team and those around you, but we’re all guilty of complaining. We complain to other people, we complain to ourselves. There’s too much change and uncertainty; things aren't like they used to be. It's going to be a hard year, a down year.
Stop.
I understand where it’s coming from. It’s easy to dwell in a negative mindset. But complaining gets you nowhere with colleagues, prospects, and your personal growth. Here are some ways to shift your thinking for the better…
Be grateful. Some of us tend to get spoiled about the life we have, thinking it's always going be a certain way. You have a job. You do good work. You’re well paid. You have a rich life beyond your business. Be thankful for the things you have and what’s going smoothly for you.
Find fun and meaning. Remind yourself what's exciting and important about your work, your team, what you do for clients, the conversations you regularly have. If you've lost sight of the enjoyment and purpose, reengage (and reenergize!) with what gives you those feelings.
Focus on what you can control. There are many variables outside of your efforts. Pick something that you can do better or be more disciplined about. Build, create, make—that’s what you can control.
Putting a stop to complaining requires conscious effort. Reframe, reconnect, refocus. You will be more disciplined about your thoughts, feelings, and words, and, most significantly, you’ll feel better.
Onward.
