Year-End Worries

At this point in the year, as we take stock of what has been and muse on what’s to come, it’s normal to feel down, worry about your pipeline, and fret over lost business. Here are three reminders to help if you're anxious about the year ahead.

  1. Look for what you like in what you already have. Consider the clients you’re working with and the business you’re doing—what are you feeling energized about? What’s going well? What could you do more of? Take a minute to look for the positive, then turn your focus to attracting more of it.
  1. Don’t rush to fill the void. When you lose business, allow yourself a timeout to regroup and think about how you want to fill that space. Often, we feel afraid when we lose clients, but it’s actually a gift. Give yourself a week, even a month, to put thought into the kind of client you’re hoping to attract before you take on anything new.
  1. Take the longer view. If you're stressing about a bad month or a bad quarter, you're missing the longer view of the next year, the next two, the next five. Take a breath—it’s going to be okay. See the value in the space after you’ve lost business or don't have enough going on. When you’re intentional around filling your workload or slate of clients, these gaps are practical and useful.

If you’re feeling down or a worrying about what's coming next, these reminders will help you stay sane.

Onward.
